Abstract

1498610 Reciprocating pumps H BARALL 9 Sept 1976 [12 Sept 1975] 37360/76 Heading F1A A pump of adjustable stroke and speed, e.g. for filling batteries with electrolyte, has an actuating piston 2 moved in one direction by compressed air or a spring and in the opposite direction by a liquid column acted upon by compressed air, the movement of the liquid column being controlled by throttle valves 20, 21 to control the piston speed, and a stop 7 being adjustable, e.g. by micrometer 10, to set the stroke. As shown, piston 2 actuates a pumping plunger 4 in a pumping chamber having conical inlet and outlet check-valves 42, 43 with sealing rings 44, 45. In Fig. 2 (not shown), plunger 4 acts on a spring-loaded pumping diaphragm (51) via a liquid column. A compressed air supply 12 is alternately connected by valve 11 to cylinder connection 13 and a liquid column reservoir 22 having a transparent wall for viewing the liquid level movement and hence the piston speed, checkvalves 16, 19 controlling the connections between throttles 20, 21 and the reservoir. An annular space defined around plunger 4 by seal member 34 is connected to reservoir 56 which may contain water to dilute leakage past seal 35. A lubricant may be introduced through the passages through rod 39 and member 34. Leakage into space 40 is vented through connection 41 to atmosphere.
