Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] In a manually-operated pump (see Group XXVIII) the open end of the barrel 1 is enlarged at 7 to receive the enlarged end 12 of a stop-sleeve 13 in which the piston-rod 11 slides, the length of the enlargement of the sleeve being less than that of the barrel, and the piston-rod is sealed by a. hat washer 9 pressed against the end of the enlargement 7 of the barrel: by a gland nut 8 screwed thereon. The hat washer may be formed from a polyvinyl chloride washer having a bore less than the diameter of the piston-rod. A cup leather piston 16, which may be of polythene, is secured to the end of the hollow pistonrod 11 by an inlet plug 17 having a passage 19 controlled by a ball valve 21.
