Abstract
1449959 Fluid regulation B O PETERSSON 9 April 1974 [10 April 1973] 15727/74 Heading G3H [Also in Divisions A5-A6] A pneumatic pulse generator, for use in producing rhythmical pressure variations in apparatus for mechanically stimulating the heart (see Division A5-A6), comprises a housing 25 having a main passageway 26 therein, a branch passageway 27 communicating via valves 29, 30 with a cylindrical space 28. A piston 31 reciprocable within space 28 is normally retained in the position shown in Fig. 5 by a spring 32 surrounding a piston-rod 33, the rod 33 and piston 31 being abuttable against seats formed in passageways 26, 27 respectively in the extreme positions of the piston. In operation, the piston 31 is in the position shown and pressurized gas is admitted to passageway 26 from a pressure tank 18 via a valve 19. A major portion of the gas flows from passageway 26 to a hose 11 leading to a power cylinder 6 for applying pressure to the patient's chest via a thrust plate 7, whilst a small amount passes through branch passageway 27 and valve 29 to space 28. When pressure in space 28 reaches a predetermined level, piston 31 is lifted from its seat on passageway 27, and, owing to the increased area now presented to passageway 27, travels to its other extreme position. Gas flow through passageway 26 is thereby prevented until the pressure in space 28 leaks away through valves 29 and 30, whereupon piston 31 is forced downwards by gas-pressure from valve 19 to its original position. The cycle is thus repeated, the rhythmical pressure variations being transmitted to hose 11. Their frequency can be regulated by adjustment of the valves 29, 30. Cylinder 6 comprises a cylindrical housing 21 having a piston 22 and a piston-rod 24 retained in the unextended position by a thrust spring 23, the thrust plate 7 being secured to the piston-rod 22 so that plate 7 is reciprocated by the pressure variations.
