Abstract
1307461 Reciprocating compressors L RICHTER 11 Jan 1971 [13 Jan 1970] 1162/71 Heading F1N A reciprocating compressor comprises opposed connected hollow pistons 4, 4<SP>1</SP> reciprocable in fixed cylinders 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, a sleeve valve 9 slidable on the pistons to control the opening and closing of delivery ports 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, in the pistons, and a mechanism driven by a shaft 24 to reciprocate both the pistons and the sleeve valve 9. The cylinders 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are mounted in a container 1 which receives the air delivery from the ports 12, 12<SP>1</SP>. Air enters the working chambers 3, 3<SP>1</SP> during the respective suction strokes through spring- loaded inlet valves 19. With one piston creating suction in one working chamber the other piston causes pressurization of the other working chamber, the sleeve valve 9 closing the delivery ports in the suction piston while opening the delivery ports in the compression piston. Pressure actuated valves 6, 6<SP>1</SP> carried by the pistons close during their piston's suction stroke and open during its compression stroke to allow air to pass through gaps in partitions 34 and then through the ports 12, 12<SP>1</SP>. The mechanism driven by the shaft 24 comprises crank pins 43, 43<SP>1</SP> carried by the shaft and arms 26, 26<SP>1</SP> pivotable on the pins, the arms 26, 26<SP>1</SP> being connected to a rod 33 passing through a hole in the pistons. The rod 33 is constrained to reciprocate along a straight line by having to ride in a rectilinear slot (13) in the sleeve 9. Cams 28, 28<SP>1</SP> fixed to rotate with the pins 43 engages abutments 29 on the sleeve 9, thereby to control its movement. Some of the air delivered to the container 1 may drive impellers 30 to assist in rotating the shaft 24.
