497,743. Compressors ; reciprocating pumps. BENNET, C. W. H. D. June 24. 1937, No. 17604. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] In a pump or compressor in which the piston or pistons are driven from cranks or eccentrics on a transverse driving shaft, the latter is of approximately the same diameter as the pistons and acts as the distributing valve. Fig. 6 shows a two-cylinder double-acting pump in which opposite cylinder ends are connected by passages 17 to form common suction and compression chambers. The pistons 5, 5a are driven by connecting-rods 7 from cranks or eccentrics on the driving shaft 9, which is formed with ports 18, 18a axially communicating with inlet and discharge passages, respectively. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9, the cylinders are single-acting. The inlet passage 23 and the discharge passage 24 communicate by means of passages 17, 17a in the cylinder block with spaces 16, 16a in the shaft 9. The spaces 16, 16a are separated by an oblique wall 21 and communicate with the cylinders by means of ports 18, 18a.
