655,343. Reciprocating pumps and compressors. YATES, D. H. Aug. 22, 1947, No. 23368. [Classes 8(i) and 102(i)] In a compressor or pump of the kind comprising a casing E in which reciprocates a chambered ram D having in its chamber a slide block C reciprocated transversely of the direction of the movement of the ram D, both the ram and slide block being operated by a single crank or eccentric B, the slide block serves both as a piston for the fluid entering and leaving the ram chamber and as a valve to co-operate with ports in the ram chamber wall by sliding contact past such ports whilst the ram co-operates with ports in the casing. During the suction stroke, Fig. 2, fluid is drawn through an inlet port F in the casing, a port G in the ram, a space M below the slide block, a channel C' in the slide block and a port H in the slide block into the pumping chamber J and is delivered therefrom during the delivery stroke through port H, another channel C<SP>1</SP>, a space N above the slide block and a port K in the slide block to the outlet opening L. The pump may be made double-acting by an arrangement of ports in the casing end covers, as shown in Fig. 5; fluid enters the pump chamber K<SP>1</SP> through an inlet F<SP>1</SP> in one casing end cover, channel C<SP>1</SP> and port H<SP>1</SP> in the ram and is delivered through port H<SP>1</SP>, an L-shaped duct M<SP>1</SP> in the slide block and an arcuate slot O in the other casing end cover; the other end of the pump is similarly arranged and suction and delivery .take place alternately from pump chambers K<SP>1</SP> and L<SP>1</SP>. The pump may be arranged for high pressure delivery by reducing the cross-sectional area of chambers K<SP>1</SP> and L<SP>1</SP> and providing co-operating hollow projecting portions on the ram D to reciprocate therein. Two or more pumps having a common delivery pipe may be arranged side by side on one driving shaft, each pump eccentric being equi-angularly disposed.
