Abstract

8854. Hansen, I. April 10. Oscillating-cylinder pumps; regulating discharge by by-passes. - In oscillating - cylinder pumps of the type in which the cylinder is mounted on a hollow trunnion divided into suction and delivery chambers by a longitudinal partition, a cock is provided in the partition for regulating the discharge by opening the discharge chamber to the suction chamber. A cylinder a with piston b is mounted on a hollow trunnion c divided by a partition d into chambers e, f, communicating respectively with inlet and outlet pipes i, k. Situated in the partition is a cock m operated from the outside for putting the two sides of the trunnion into communication. The oscillation of the cylinder due to the reciprocation of the piston causes the ports h to register alternately with ports g of the suction and delivery chambers. The pump may be made double-acting by forming a chamber on the side of the cylinder and open to it at the top, the bottom having ports which register with ports on the trunnion, so arranged that when one side of the cylinder is open to suction, the other side is open to delivery. The apparatus may work as a motor. Several cylinders may be mounted on the same trunnion. When some cylinders work as motors to drive the others as pumps, transverse webs are necessary in the trunnion. The standard may be used as an air-vessel.
