Abstract

2618. Weir, W. Feb. 3. Steam - engine air pumps in series; steam pumps; temperature of fluid, controlling.-Re. lates to steam-engine air-pumps of the type described in Specification 20,202/05, in which separate dry and wet air-pumps are used, the dry pump discharging into the barrel of the wet pump, and consists in arranging the barrels side by side, in actuating the wet pump by a steam cylinder direct and the dry pump by a beam connected to the piston-rod of the wet pump, and in injecting cold water into the suction pipe of the dry pump. The Figure shows a steam-driven air-pump unit of this type in which the dry air-pump 2 draws air and vapour from the pipe 9 and delivers it through the pipe 16 into the wet air-pump 1 at a point above the bucket valve 12 and below the head valve 13. Cold water is injected into the suction pipe of the dry pump at 10. The pump 1 is driven direct by the steam cylinder 4, and the pump 2 by a beam 3 connected to the piston-rod.
