Abstract
846,578. Reciprocating pumps; compressors. WELTIS ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 24, 1957 [May 30, 1957], No. 17246/57. Classes 8(1) and 102(1). A pump or compressor comprises a pair of pistons mounted for reciprocation in a common cylinder, or axially aligned or opposed offset parallel cylinders in which each piston is connected by a single connecting rod to a common crankshaft at a phase difference such that the maximum torque required to drive one of the pistons is coincident with the minimum torque required to drive the other piston. In the embodiment shown a cylinder 1 houses two pistons 3, 4 connected to a common crankshaft 8 such that the pistons are at a phase difference of about 60 degrees. The pistons divide the cylinder into three pumping chambers 11, 12, 17 each having inlet and outlet valves connecting the cylinders to a common inlet and outlet chamber. A by-pass valve is provided to limit the outlet pressure. By arranging two cylinders offset straight connecting rods may be used and the space between the cylinders still utilised for pumping.
