Abstract
1,221,136. Reciprocating pumps. GEWERKSCHAFT EISENHUTTE WESTFALIA. July 30, 1968 [April 24, 1968], No.36371/68. Heading F1A. In a reciprocating pumping device with sealing packings, a leakage collecting groove 7 is situated between two of the packings 5, 6 and communicates at least part of the time with a chamber at reduced pressure whereby liquid in the groove is withdrawn. In the embodiment shown, the piston 1 has sealing packings and grooves at each end, the grooves communicating in an axial passage 9 and valves 10, 10a with respective pumping chambers II, I. The piston is reciprocated by fluid-pressure fed through a two-way valve 11 alternately to chambers III, IV. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a separate axial passage through the piston is connected to each groove and in a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), additional valves are disposed in respective conduits joining the grooves and axial passage 9. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), the packings and grooves are formed in the cylinder walls and the connection between the grooves and pumping chambers extend outside the cylinder. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 5 the pump comprises a plunger 21 passing into a chamber through a stuffing box having sleeves 22a, 22b, the leakage liquid passing via grooves 27, 32 and passage 33 to a chamber formed outside the housing 22 but within the pumping device.
