Abstract
965,251. Reciprocating pumps. C. HUGHES. Jan. 12, 1962 [Jan. 27, 1961; Feb. 20, 1961], Nos. 3172/61 and 6080/61. Heading F1A. A reciprocating pump for liquids having solids in suspension comprises a liquid chamber formed from a casing having axially flexible side walls. An impulsion member 12 divides the chamber into equal volume inlet and outlet chambers 14, 16 respectively. The member 12 is oscillated by means of eccentrics 32 on a shaft 30 which is driven by an internal combustion engine. The shaft 30 passes between diametrically opposite ports 22 in the member 12. Two, or preferably three sets of valves 26 are provided. The casing comprises rubber or the like rings 38 between which are interposed aluminium or the like I-section rings 40. The casings are assembled under compression and this compression is not completely taken up by the movement of the member 12 to prevent leakage. A flexible cylinder reinforced internally and externally with rigid rings may be used instead of the stack of rings. In an alternative embodiment a second impulsion member oscillating out of phase with the first is provided. In the intermediate chamber so formed there is a fixed ported member carrying a drive shaft for externally mounted eccentrics. Rods fitted to the eccentrics extend to the impulsion members. The inlet, intermediate and outlet chambers are substantially of the same volume. The volumetric change of the intermediate chamber is twice that of the other two on each stroke and as each impulsion member carries a non-return valve the pump is double acting.
