Abstract

1,198,378. I.C. engines with hydraulic drives; compressors; rotary pumps and motors. FRIED KRUPP G.m.b.H. July 19, 1968 [July 22, 1967], No.34637/68. Headings F1B; F1F and F1N. In an opposed piston engine or compressor having main pistons 7, 8 connected to displacer pistons 11, 12, which act through liquid columns upon a rotor 3, the piston 12 acts through liquid columns 14, 17 to drive rotor 3 whilst piston 11 acts through liquid column 18 on the upper surface of piston 12. The passages 14, 17, discharge into diamaterially opposed chambers 5, 6, associated with rotor 3, another pair of chambers being connected to a second pair of opposed pistons. At starting or slow running air or liquid under pressure is admitted through pipe 16 to the space below piston 11 to keep it in contact with its liquid column. In an I.C engine, the space 20 constitutes a combustion chamber and the pistons serve to drive the rotor 3; in a compressor the rotor 3 is driven externally and drives the pistons 8, 7, the space 20 forming the compressor chamber. In Fig. 3 the upper piston 7 is connected by rods 22, 23, to a pair of secondary pistons 24, 25.
