583,390. Reciprocating pumps and compressors. BROWNE, C. H., CHESTER-, and CROLL, Ltd., J. Aug. 22, 1944, No. 16028. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] In a reciprocating pump for liquids or gases, a cylinder 1 has a partitioning member 5 that forms two working chambers each fitted with a piston 8 having a segmental cross - section. Each piston has a projection that carries a roller 17 which engages a cam groove 10 formed between two sleeves 13, 14 fitted in an enlarged bore in the cylinder; the pistons are reciprocated by relative rotation between the cylinder and the partitioning member. Suction and delivery openings 26 on the cylinder are connected to the working chambers by a ported disc 22 attached to the partitioning member 5. The cam may be shaped so that the pistons move only when the connections are made to the suction and delivery. One piston only may be used and the other working chamber may be fitted with a balance weight. Alternatively the partitioning member may divide the cylinder into more than two working chambers. A relief valve may be arranged between the delivery and suction passages to relieve excess delivery pressure.
