[Also in Group XXVI] A pump Fig. 2, of the reciprocating pistontype suitable for pumping high-temperature fluid such as boiler feed-water comprises a crankcase 10, valve housing 14, and cylinders 18 of a ceramic material such as porcelain, clamped between recesses 84, 88 formed in the crankcase and valve housing respectively, the ends of the cylinders being sealed by gaskets 86, 90. A crankshaft 48 mounted in the crankcase 10 is driven by a motor through a shaft 54 and gears 50, 52, and, as shown in Fig. 4, carries three connecting rods 62 which are connected to crossheads 72 slidably mounted in guides 70. Each piston-rod 74 passes through a packed gland 76 into a cylinder 18 and is at one end connected to the crosshead and at the other provided with a floating piston assembly 78 (Group XXVI). The valve housing 14 is provided with three separate pump chambers 94 each of which at one end is in communication with its cylinder 18 and closed at the other end by a plug 124 which is sealed by a gasket 128 and clamped in position by a bar 120. An inlet manifold 96 is in communication with the chambers 94 through a ball-valve located in each chamber, the ball 138 in its open position contacting a pair of resilient buffer rings 132 mounted on the plug 124; a plug 142 is provided to facilitate the fitting of the ball-valve. An outlet manifold 102 similarly communicates with the chambers 94 through ball-valves 148 urged into their closed positions by springs 154 ; valve covers 152 sealed by gaskets 156 are clamped in access openings 154 by a bar 158. More or less than three cylinders may be provided.
