Abstract

1374117 Rotary positive-displacement machines A R THOMAS 3 Dec 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 56344/71 Heading F1F In a sliding-vane pump the vanes 48 .. 51 are inter-connected diametrally and partially supported by rods 52, 54 carrying compression springs 58, each rod being fixed to one vane and sliding in the opposite vane. One pair of rods may either straddle the other rods (as shown) or alternate with the other rods, Fig. 5 (not shown). The rotor comprises segments 46 of a hollow cylinder fixed to part annular flanges 44 on mutually parallel discs with shafts 32, 34. The housing may have cooling fins 26. In an I.C. engine having two units, or "portions", (84, 82), Figs. 6 to 10 (not shown), for compression and combustion-andexpansion, respectively, each portion has a rotor and inter-connected vanes similar to those of the pump shown. The rods of the portion (82) are thicker, and thus stronger, than those of the other portion. Fuel igniters e.g. spark plugs, (142) are disposed in the rotor of the portion (82) between the vanes. In the portion (82) the inlet and exhaust ports (130, 132) can be shut by the vanes so as to prevent leakage therethrough from one intervane space to another.
