Abstract

1,272,667. Rotary-piston machines. C. EYER. July 29, 1969 [Aug. 1, 1968], No.37922/69. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston machine such as an I.C. engine, hydraulic motor, pump or compressor, comprising a generally cylindrical housing 22, Fig. 1, having inwardly directed walls 21, Fig. 1 (rt. hd. side), a central cylindrical body 26 having part cylindrical recesses and a pair of general cylindrical rotary pistons 28 having recesses 27 to form T-shaped parts 28 and whose diameters are equal to the internal radius of the housing and axes spaced apart by this radius so that as the housing and pistons rotate to form variable volume chambers any point on the circumference of a piston moves in a straight line through the centre of the housing (principle of La Hire). Thus since the extensions of the side faces of the walls 21 pass through the centre of the housing the sharp acute angled edges of the T-shaped piston parts will theoretically be at all times in frictionless sealing contact with the walls 21. In practice these sharp edges may be damaged or destroyed due to corrosion and temperature changes to destroy the sealing lines. To avoid this damage and reduce wear on the pistons the side faces 35 of the walls 21<SP>1</SP>, left hand side, Fig. 1, are spaced from and parallel to a radial plane 241 which passes through a point 31 at the centre of a circle 32 tangent to the face 35 and determines the shape of the edge 29<SP>1</SP> of the rotating piston 25<SP>1</SP> which has part cylindrical portions so that during operation different portions of the extremities of the "T's" contact the faces 35 to reduce wear. The invention is applied to an I.C. engine, Fig.2, having injection nozzles 39 through which fuel is injected into primary combustion chamber 52, 54 when at its smallest volume. In secondary combustion spaces 56a 56b, further burning may take place to increase thrust in rotating the pistons and reduce pollution before the gases are exhausted through exhausts 58.
