Abstract

974,430. Rotary piston internal combustion engines. CURTISS-WRIGHT CORPORATION. Aug. 29, 1961 [Sept. 16, 1960], No. 31027/61. Heading F1F. A rotary piston I.C. engine comprises at least two identical engine units arranged in side-by-side relationship with their pistons mounted for rotation on eccentrics which are angularly disposed with respect to each other on a common one-piece shaft and a semicylindrical, half-bearing located on the shaft between adjacent engine units for supporting the shaft against deflection by forces resulting from the combustion of the combustion gases. As shown, the engine comprises two units with each unit comprising an outer body 12, Fig. 1, having axially-spaced end plates 22, 24 and an intermediate peripheral wall 18 having a twoarched epitrochoidal inner profile 20, Fig. 3, co-operable with the apices 38 of a generally triangular piston 10 having arcuate sides and eccentrically supported on an eccentric 30 formed on a common one-piece shaft 26 having an axis 16 concentric with the axis of the outer body. The eccentrics 30 are displaced 180 degrees angularly and the adjacent end plates 24 are formed as a single member 60 having a bore 62, Fig. 3, of identical radius to the outer surface 64 of a half-bearing 56. The member 60 is formed with an arcuate key-way 68 which receives an arcuate tapered key 66 to permit easy assembly of the bearing and prevents axial and/or tilting movement of the bearing within the outer body. To maintain the bearing in assembled relation within the outer body a screw 70 is fitted. The bearing is arranged in the housing so that the shaft supporting surface is oppositely disposed in relation to the combustion chamber in which the spark-plug 46 is disposed so that the forces of combustion urging the piston and shaft upwardly is supported by the bearing. The two units are aligned so that intake ports 48 which merge into a common inlet 47, exhaust ports 50 and the nodes in the epitrochoidal inner profiles 20 are one-behind the other so that the combustion chambers on both units are identically located.
