Abstract
1,242,958. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. TOYO KOGYO K.K. May 19, 1969 [June 6, 1968], No.25495/69. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I.C. engine, shown in Fig. 1 as a two-unit engine, of the kind comprising a three-sided piston 3 which carries out a planetary movement within a casing comprising for each unit, a centre housing 2 having a two-lobed epitrochoidal inner periphery and side housings 1, the inner surface of each side housing 1 over an area a, Fig.3, extending radially outwardly from the outer envelope 17 of the loci delineated by the sliding oil seal 14 to at least the locus 16 delineated by the moving apex seals 4 is case-hardened, preferably by high frequency hardening technique, over a plurality of narrow zones 18. Instead of the zones being radial as shown in Fig. 3 they may be spirally arranged or in a pattern of concentric wavy rings. The zones may be more concentrated adjacent the minor axis of the epitrochoid or over the compression zone of each side housing. Limiting the hardening to narrow zones in the stated area is said to inhibit strain-hardening of the side housings and reduce wear on the oil seals and the inner surfaces of the side housings. In the case of an engine having a side suction port 7<SP>1</SP>, hardening of the surfaces adjacent the port may be omitted to prevent the possible forming of hardening cracks.
