Abstract

679,329. Rotary engine and compressors. UNGEMACH, H. Oct. 31, 1950 [Oct. 31, 1949], No. 26605/50. Class 110(ii) An outwardly-sliding vane engine or compressor has a rotor built up of members 5 having spring-pressed packing pieces 9 bearing against casing ends 15 and against the sides 21 of vanes 16. The members 5 are suppported by pins 6 in a rotor 7 on a shaft 4. Each vane 16 is provided with trunnions 33 bearing on cams 35 the trunnions being surrounded by resilient bands or links 38. Pins 20 support pairs of plates 21 at each side of a vane, a slot 22, Fig. 9 (not shown) between each pair allowing the plates to pivot slightly on their pins. Annular grooves 23, in each pair of plates, contain spring rings 24 which press the plates against ends 15. A spacing ring 25 holds the pairs of plates 21 parallel. Packings 26, 27, each shaped as a half suare, are pressed outwards by spring rings 29, so that three sealing surfaces 31 are pressed against the ends 15 and the casing box 18. The ring 25 supports the lower halves of plates 26, 27 and transmits centrifugal force from the plates, through the rings 24 to the two outer plates 21 and from them to the trunnions 33. Figs. 1, 2 show an internalcombustion engine with inlet and exhaust ports 40, 41 and a socket 42 for a sparking plug (unless compression-ignition is used). Combustion spaces 43 and a cooling jacket 39 are provided. The rotor may be arranged eccentrically in a casing which then provides one crescent-shaped working- chamber. The engine may be modified to act as a pump or compressor or be used with liquid as working-fluid. The packing pieces 9 may have their separating spaces staggered, from one groove to the next. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the inlet and exhaust ports are duplicated.
