Abstract
491,497. Rotary internal-combustion engines. LAYTHORPE, A. E., [Representative of LAYTHORPE, F. A.]. March 2, 1937, No. 6150. [Class 110 (ii)] A compressor unit 2 supplies compressed fuel gas through passages 26, 27, 28, Fig. 5, to an engine 1. Both compressor and engine are provided with vanes 9 which slide in radial slots arranged in eccentric rotors keyed to coaxial shafts 3, 5. The working-chambers 8, 7, in the two units are displaced angularly for balancing purposes. The vanes are connected in pairs by rods 10, and segmental packing strips 11 are supported as shown in Fig. 7 by a spring-pressed piston bearing on discs D. Segmental packing bars 15 seal the ends of the rotors. Lubricant is fed through a passage 20 to the hollow shaft 3, and passes up rods 10 and out through holes to the outer faces of the vanes when they are at their furthest point of projection from the rotor, at which point the pressure in a cell between adjacent vanes is at its lowest. Conical pockets 23 in the rotor 1, may have plugs 24 of various sizes fitted to vary the capacity of a cell. A throttle valve controls the mixture supply to the compressor. The engine may be modified to run on a Diesel cycle. For regulating purposes, each alternate cell in the engine may be cut out, and supplied with cooling or scavenging air. Air for starting purposes may be introduced through additional inlets to the compressor or engine. Steam may be generated in a boiler heated by exhaust gases, and supplied to a further engine on the shaft 5.
