Abstract
1349521 Rotary piston machines H OPPENHEIM 19 April 1971 [1 Jan 1970 24 March 1971] 26/70 and 7669/71 Heading F1F A rotary piston I. C. engine of the outwardly sliding abutment type comprises a water-cooled annular chamber 12 formed in the end face 13 of a casing 10 and sealed by a plate 17 mounted on a rotary disc 18 keyed to a shaft 20, the plate 17 carrying a pair of pistons 35, 36 contoured to the cross-section of the chamber 12, the abutment members 41, 42 operating in synchronism with the pistons 35, 36 by means of pivoted levers 45, 46 connected to arms 49, 50 biased by springs 53 into contact with a cam 51 mounted on the shaft 20. Admission and exhaust ports 57, 56 are located one on each side of one of the abutments 41, and the other abutment 42 has ports and passages to admit and exhaust gases to and from a pair of combustion chambers 61, 62. The chamber 12 has tapered walls at least at the part adjacent the face 13 to facilitate sealing by the plate 17, the disc 18 being biased towards the chamber 12 by a nut 37 on the shaft 20. Passages 70 in the disc 18 supply lubricant to the faces of the piston abutting the chamber walls 14, 15, 16, on which faces seals may also be provided. The chamber 12 may have frusto-conical side walls 15, 16 as shown or the side walls may be cylindrical the base of the chamber remote from the plate 17 being flat or semi-circular in section, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). The machine may have other numbers of pistons and abutments and may also operate as a steam engine, a compressed gas motor, a pump or compressor.
