837,128. Rotary pumps and engines. MARSHALL, J. W. July 17, 1958 [July 18, 1957; April 17, 1958], Nos. 22770/57 and 12211/58. Class 110 (2). In a rotary pump or engine of the rotary abutment type one member 9 is in the form of an eccentric and co-operates with a two-lobed member 8, gearing 6, 7 constrains the member 9 to rotate with twice the angular velocity of the member 8. A rotary valve 26 may permit of expansion or compression of the fluid medium. The compression ratio may be altered by adjusting the edge 19 of the port 17, and by the introduction of a valve 25 the mechanism can be used at will as a blower without compression. Discs mounted on the rotor shafts may provide sealing means and may also be so constructed as to balance the eccentric rotor 9. The rotor tips may be flattened to decrease leakage flow across them and may be provided with labyrinth or other type packing. A number of casings 1 may be arranged side by side for multistage compression, with intercooling, the rotors being offset angularly for balancing purposes.
