Abstract

588,287. Rotary compressors and motors. HOWDEN & CO., Ltd., J., and ULANDER, P. H. N. Oct. 6, 1945, No. 26082. [Class 110 (ii)] In a compressor or motor of the helical lobe or meshing-screw type, the inlet ends of the lobes incorporate aerofoil-shaped nose members to reduce the aerodynamic loss at the inlet. The rotor 1 having four convex lobes, and the co-operating rotor 2 having six concave lobes are geared together by gears 4, 5 and intermesh without contact. There is a clearance between the rotors and the casing 3. The rotors have aerofoil nose Wheels 19, 20 which are separated from the rotors proper by a sealing plate 21. The latter has an inlet port which allows gas to flow into the space between the lobes almost immediately after they disengage. The length of the aerofoil nose portion of each lobe varies between root and tip in such a way that the ratio of length to width is constant. The inlet end bearings 11, 12 are supported by streamlined spiders 22.
