Abstract

784,554. Rotary compressors and engines. BREWER, C. E. June 15, 1956 [Aug. 30, 1955], No. 24853/55. Class 110 (2). A hollow rotor 14 has one or more piston vanes 15 each of which coacts with a recess 12 in a rotary abutment 16, a stationary member 28 containing a supply duct 29 supporting each rotor 14. Ports 27, in the rotor, allow fluid to enter the working chamber 13 and the compressed fluid is delivered past one or more valves 38. As shown, three rotors 14, 16, with involute-shaped vanes, are coupled by gears 24, 25, 26, and sealing means 23, 35 is provided on the shafts 20, 19, 18. End plates, or packing pieces may be provided within the end faces of vanes 15, springs pressing the plates outwards. A passage 40, within an end plate, provides communication between a working chamber and a recess 12, to prevent pressure fluctuations. Further ducts 41, 42 may be provided in the tips of the vanes to even out the pressures around the point of discharge and create some turbulence at the vane tip for sealing purposes. Alternatively, or in addition, a packing strip may be located in each vane tip. A coolant may be circulated through a jacket 43 and the discharged gas may pass through a heat exchanger. The compressors or engines may be arranged with multi-stages. The vanes 15 may be detachable from the rotors. Grooves may be formed in the upper end faces of a vane and/or abutment member to allow fluid flow over the end faces. One or more flywheels may be used.
