Abstract

479,705. Reciprocating pumps and compressors. SKARLUND, C. A. Dec. 29, 1936, No. 35588. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] A machine working with liquid or gas, and serving as a motor, pump, or compressor, has two adjacent rectangular chambers in which work pistons at 90‹, which pistons serve as cylinders for pistons working therein and transversely thereto and arranged upon a crank or eccentric on the power shaft. The chambers are separated by a ported plate through which they communicate. The fluid distribution of both chambers is controlled by the outer pistons acting as valves, or by slide valves connected thereto, which control ports in the casing. The machine shown comprises two parts each with four frame parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a and end plates 5, 5a. These form rectangular chambers separated by a plate 10. Hollow rectangular pistons work in the chambers, and house secondary hollow pistons 18. The vertical walls of the piston 11, 12 have ports 21, 22 which control stationary ports 23 .. 26 respectively, and the horizontal walls of piston 11a, 12a have ports 21a, 22a which control ports 23a ... 26a. The ports 23 .. 26 may control the outlet of fluid. The inner pistons are mounted on a common crank-pin 31. Working chambers 33..36, 33a .. 36a are arranged on both sides of the pistons. The adjacent chambers are in communication through ports in the plate 10. The ports 21, 22 serve alternately as inlet and outlet ports for the chambers 35, 36, 34a, 33a, and the ports 21a, 22a will serve alternately as inlet and outlet ports for the chambers 35a, 36a, 33, 34. With the crank rotating as shown, discharge takes place through ports 25, 26a, 24, 23a and suction through the other ports. In a modification, the main pistons are mounted on eccentrics and the four sides of each cylinder are provided with ports. Ports 21, 22, 21a, 22a control ports in the walls as in the figures shown, the ports in the other walls are controlled by plate valves secured to the piston in each adjacent cylinder respectively. The inlet or outlet ports in the outer casings may be provided with control valves.
