Abstract

656,949. Reciprocating pumps. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. Jan. 14, 1949, No. 1132 Convention date, Jan. 23, 1948, [Class 102(i)] A reciprocating pump comprises a number of pistons 26 operating in cylinders in a block 7, guided in bores in a block 8 and reciprocated by a swash-plate 32. A boost pump P delivers through the inlet 3 to suction ports 25 of each cylinder, that are controlled by the pistons, and also to the spill chamber 9 through passages 10. The driving shaft 29 is mounted in a bearing 30, the end wall of which has a restricted opening 31 through which liquid from the spill chamber 9 may pass into the bore of the shaft 29 and through the radial bores 34 to lubricate, and cool the creep plates and thrust bearing of the swash-plate. The liquid flows into the chamber containing the swash plate and due to the restriction 31 and the unrestricted overflow 36 pressure is not produced in this chamber sufficient to interfere with the suction strokes of the pistons 26 under the influence of the springs 27. Sleeves 52 surround the pistons 26 where they pass through the spill chamber and control the spill from the ports 53 in the pistons; the sleeves are connected to a spider 51 secured to a rod 48 adjusted by delivery pressure acting through restriction 46 and passage 47 to a piston in cylinder 45 and loaded by adjustable springs 49, 50.
