Abstract
740,487. Revolving-cylinder pumps and compressors. SMITH, J. E. May 21, 1953 [Aug. 18,1952],No. 14297/53. Classes 8(1) and 102(1). A radial revolving- cylinder pump comprises a rotor 14 carrying cylinders 54 having bearing liners 55 that receive sliding sleeves 56 carried by a head 58 which is reciprocated by an eccentric member. A further sleeve 57 is carried by the rotor 14 and is located within the sleeve 56. A piston 63 is fitted within the sleeve 57 and the space between the piston 63 and the head 58 is filled with oil supplied through ducts 97, telescoping tubes 99, duct 101 and telescoping tubes 110, 114 which are fitted with non-return valves to prevent reverse flow and also with openings which align and permit flow only during a part of the inward movement of the pistons 63. The oil transmits the inward movement of the heads 58 to the pistons 63 which are fitted with valves which are opened at the innermost position of the pistons if too much oil collects in the chamber. The oil is distributed from the space adjacent the piston to the working parts of the pump to lubricate them. A valve body 13 is located in centre of the rotor 14 and is fitted with an inlet valve 17 and delivery valve 58 for each cylinder. The inlet valves are positively actuated as they rotate, by a stationary cam 24 which is adjustable by a shaft 25 to ensure that the valves close just before the discharge stroke commences. Composite eccentrics are mounted on each side of the cylinders and each comprise an eccentric 69 on which is mounted another eccentric 78 carrying a ring 72, having recesses 84, to which a further ring 83 is attached. The rotor 14 is fitted with teeth driven by pinions 6 and the heads 58 carry spindles 73 fitted with bearing sleeves on their outer ends which enter the recesses 84 and thus reciprocate the heads 58 relatively to the rotor 14. The eccentric 78 carries a rack 127 which is adjusted by a piston loaded by the delivery pressure of the pump ; the piston may be loaded by a weight or by gas compressed in an enclosed space. The pump may be used for mud and fitted to a frame on which is mounted a prime mover and the mud may be supplied under pressure from another pump.
