Abstract

768,336. Valve gear. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. April 27, 1955 [April 27, 1954], No. 12187/55. Class 7 (6). An hydraulic clearance adjusting device for valve gear comprises a fluid pressure space 19, Fig. 1, between a piston 16 and cylinder 10 which is connected to a reservoir enclosed within a resilient sleeve 21, by a passage 25 containing a non-return valve 23 and by a throttling passage 27, e.g. formed by the clearance between the piston 16 and cylinder 10, the passages being arranged in parallel so that when the valve-operating gear opens the valve 14, the fluid can pass from the pressure space 19 to the reservoir 20 only through the throttling passage 27 which is so dimensioned as to give relatively large lost motion and short valve stroke at low engine speeds and relatively small lost motion and long valve stroke at high engine speeds. In Fig. 1 the device is positioned at the upper end of a push rod 10 which is surrounded by a plunger 11 contacting the valve rocker 13 and guided by a bush 26. When the valve 14 is closed the piston 16 is urged away from the cylinder 10 by a spring 17 to take up any clearance in the valve gear, the non-return valve 23 opening to permit free flow of fluid from the reservoir 20 to the pressure space 19. The clearance 27 between the piston 16 and cylinder 10 is, for example, 0.1 to 0.2 mm. which permits a relatively large amount of fluid to escape from the pressure space 19 at low speeds but only a small amount at high speeds. In a modification, Fig. 4, the hydraulic device 110 acts upon a slidable member 111 carrying the pivot of the valve lever, the piston 116 being abutted against a stationary pin 130. A second throttling passage 132 controlled by an adjustable needle valve 133 is also provided, in addition to or instead of the clearance 127 between the piston and cylinder, for the escape of fluid from the pressure space 119 to the reservoir 120.
