831,984. Valve gear. ENGINEERING RESEARCH & APPLICATION Ltd., [formerly ENGLISH RACING AUTOMOBILES Ltd.]. Nov. 5, 1957 [Nov. 7, 1956], No. 33994/56. Class 7(6) An hydraulic tappet for an overhead camshaft engine comprises a cam-follower 10 with a boss 11 in which slides a spring- loaded plunger 13, the space 22 being supplied with oil through a supply passage 19 and a valve 21 formed by a thin-walled flexible cylinder. The upper end of the plunger 13 is relieved at 20 to accommodate the valve 21 which comprises a cupshaped member formed of nylon, the cylindrical wall of which may be slit on opposite sides of the outlet of passage 19. If the valve 21 fails, the valve 16 remains operative due to the cam-follower 10 contacting the upper end of the plunger 13.
