Abstract

783,803. Valve-gear; lubricating. ELLIS, F. E., and WHATMOUGH, A. C. June 12, 1956 [April 20, 1955], No. 11345/55. Classes 7(2) and 7(6) A poppet valve 11 is opened and closed respectively by direct thrust from cams 21 and 22 acting through a linearly guided cage 20 which has lateral but not longitudinal play relative to the valve 11. The lateral play is between parts 23, 24. The cams 21, 22 bear on hard - surfaced plates 26, 30 both of which may be adjustably mounted in the cage 20 although as shown the plate 26 bears directly on cage shoulders and on the end of the valve 11, only the plate 30 being adjustabe, by screwed engagement with the cage 20. A lock ring 31 screws down on the plate 30 and acts thereon via a tab washer, interengaging serrations or vernier hole and dowel locking. The plate 26 has an aperture to clear the nose of the cam 22 and the cams 21, 22 have bores 28, 28a leading lubricant to the plates 26, 30. A light spring load may be provided to assist valve closure when starting from cold, and the valve-closing cam 22 may act through slightly resilient means. The invention is shown applied to both inlet and exhaust valves 11, 12 of a multicylinder engine having overhead camshafts 13 supported in multi-part casings 14, in cylindrical guides of which the cages 20 move in substantial or complete alignment with their respective valve axes.
