Abstract

692,886. Tappets. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 13, 1950 [Jan. 5, 1950], No. 30406/50. Class 80 (iii). [Also in Group XXVII] A hydraulic tappet particularly for internal-combustion engine valve gear comprises a piston 28 and cylinder 14, a valve controlled passage 29 in one end of the piston for flow of liquid from the interior of the piston to the cylinder, and a vent 49 in the other end of the piston, cooperating with a channel 50 in a rod 6 actuated by the tappet, for the release of gases escaping from the liquid in the piston. The tappet is actuated by an offset cam 4 which causes the tappet to rotate, and the passage 29 is controlled by a ball valve 35 surrounded by a cage 31. The end 5 of the pushrod 6 seats in a concave recess in the top of the piston and is provided with the recess 50 and passages 51 which co-operate with the vent 49 to permit the escape of the gases. The piston 28 receives oil from the engine lubricating system through passage 18 and ports 19, 41.
