Abstract

403,300. Valve gear ; casings. WALFORD, E. W., 18, Hertford Street, Coventry.- (Read, B. ; 295, Chalmers Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) June 2, 1933, No. 15980. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] In a multicylinder engine having inclined overhead valves 11 actuated by a single cam shaft 16, this shaft is arranged in a housing 17 supported directly from a one-piece cylinder head 10, and actuates the valves through tappets 15 and rockers 14. The tappet guides 19 and the bearings 20 for the rocker pivots may be integral with the housing 17. The rockers may be formed of sheet-metal pressings having two cheeks 21 with co-axial holes 22, as shown in Fig. 3, for receiving the pivot 23 which also passes through the bearing 20. End caps 25, 26 are fitted into the holes 22, so that their flanges 29 bear against the inner faces of the cheeks 21 and against the outer faces 30 of the bearing 20. The pivot 23 is formed with a slot at one end for engaging a crosspiece 24 on the cap 25, and with a hole 28 at the other end to receive a spring pin 27. Wearing-tips 31 may be copper-brazed to the rocker. An oil-tight cover 35 encloses the whole.
