Abstract
809,027. Valve gear. SUCKLING, J. H. July 29, 1955. No. 22056/55. Class 7(6) In a valve operating mechanism, for an internal combustion engine of the type employing poppet or mushroom valves, including a first rocker arm operated by a cam to open the valve and a second rocker which acts under the influence of a cam to impart movement to the valve (or at least one of the valves if there be more than one) in a a closing direction after the valve has been opened, the second rocker is supported for a rockting movement by a plunger mounted for sliding movement in a guide, the plunger being backed by a compression spring. In Fig. 1 the valve is opened by a cam 9 and rocker 10. A second cam 16 on the camshaft 4 has part of its profile at least partially concentric to the camshaft axis. As the peak of the cam 9 reaches the arm of the rocker 10' the flat part 16a of the cam 16 is brought into concidence with the roller 29 so that the rocker 28 offers no resistance to opening of the valve 3. The flat part 16a may be so designed that when it comes into concidence with the roller 29 it allows the roller to rise to such an extent that the spring 20 will be free to raise the plunger 18 in pocket 17. The degree of upward movement may be sufficient to cause the upper end of the plunger to come into engagement with the removable cover cap 26. The cam 16 may be formed with a portion of reduced radius to enable the roller to rise sufficiently to relieve the valve 3 of the spring loading at the stage :of rising pressure in the cylinder. The valve shown is the exhaust valve. It is stated that the mechanism promotes rotation of the valve for every several thousands of revolutions of the crankshaft.
