Abstract
492,077. Regulating. TIPPEN, F. J. Aug. 3, 1937, No. 21328. [Class 7 (vi)] In engines having overhead inlet and exhaust valves opening downwardly into the compression space, one of the valves is lifted to relieve compression by means of a spring which is strong enough to overcome the usual valveclosing spring, but is normally held out of action by its controlling-mechanism. The Figure shows an overhead valve 6 normally actuated through a push rod 9 and rocker 10, but adapted to be lifted for decompression by the action of a spring 24 through a bell-crank 14 arranged beneath a collar 16 on the push rod, the spring 24 being held out of action by a cam 27. When the spring 24 is released, the bell-crank 14 is operated to lift the valve, and if the piston should come into contact therewith at the top of its stroke, as in Diesel engines with small clearance, the valve is able to close somewhat, against the action of the spring 24. The pivot of the bell-crank 14 is carried by a pin 18 mounted in an eccentric bushing 19, which may be rotatably adjusted to vary the position of the bell-crank. The cams. 27 for the various cylinders may be arranged to bring the decompressor springs into action successively, or in pairs. A pair of bell-cranks may be mounted on the same cover-plate 13.
