Actuating - mechanism. - In cam-actuated valve gear, the valve-actuating cam is supplemented by a second cam which, while not effecting positive closing of the valve, acts on a spring carried by the valve tappet or rocker in such a way as to overcome the inertia forces arising in the valve gear and maintain pressure contact between such tappet or rocker and the valve-actuating cam during the actuation of the valve. The second cam may be designed to cause a constant spring pressure during the entire cycle of lifted and seated periods of the valve. Fig. 1 shows a cam 6 actuating a valve through a rocker 9, which is formed with a third arm 17 carrying a spring 18 acting on a slide 16 bearing on a second cam 15. In a modification, the slide 16 is replaced by another lever arm pivoted separately on the axis 10. Fig. 7 shows the spring 62 arranged between tappets 56 and 59 acted on by cams 57 and 64 respectively.
