[Class 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXVI] A tappet rod for a poppet valve is divided into two parts f, p and the adjacent ends of the parts are disposed in a chamber g<1> to which oil is supplied under slight pressure past a non- return valve b disposed in a chamber f<2> within the cam follower f. Oil enters the chamber from the passage o through bores o<3> in the tappet guide, and an annular chamber o<2> and passages o<4> in the cam follower. Guides g2 prevent the cam follower from rotating. At low engine speeds, the leakage of oil past the tappet rod allows the cam follower part f to act directly on the upper or plunger part p, but at higher engine speeds an oil buffer develops between the parts and takes up the clearance between the tappet rod and the valve stem. The cam follower f has a larger diameter than the plunger part p to increase the valve lift,
