Abstract

574,852. Valve gear. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 7, .1944, No. 2204. Convention date, March 10, 1943. [Class 7 (vi,)] Hydraulic means for reducing tappet chatter comprise a hollow tappet body 52 which is lifted by the cam 58 and a plunger 82, connected to the valve, e.g. by a push-rod 42, and provided with an annular recess 80 to which oil is supplied by a passage 70, and from which it flows past a cone-shaped resilient washer 86 to a chamber 114; restricted escape means for the oil comprise a pin 110 and a passage 108. The resilient washer 86, which may be made from a material known as "Neoprene," is held by a retainer 90 mounted on a spring 96. A block 100 limits the movement of the plunger and diminishes the size of the oil chamber 114. In the modification, Fig. 3, the washer 86 is held by a spacer 118 having a collar 137 and a retainer 90<1> having a number of small grooves on its upper surface. The parts are held together by a pin 110' which has a helical groove 136 whereby a small amount of oil is allowed to escape to a vent 108.
