600,226. Valve gear for fluid-pressure engines. HATTINK, W. A. Oct. 19, 1945, No. 27586. Convention date, May 24, 1943. [Class 22 (ii)] In a driving gear for a slide valve of a piston engine which controls the admission, or both the admission and the exhaust, for only one end of a cylinder and is reciprocated directly by means of a cam a1 or through the intermediary of one or more transmission elements, the contact point with or on the cam travels continuously along the periphery of the cam. A roller b may co-operate with the cam. The cam surface is shaped in such a manner and the slide valve is so arranged with respect to the cam that with the extreme position of the slide valve corresponding to completely opened admission port the contact point with or on the cam is nearest to the axis of the cam-shaft, and with the other extreme position of the slide valve corresponding to completely closed admission port if the slide valve only controls the admission, or to completely opened exhaust port if the slide valve also controls the exhaust, the contact point on the cam is most remote from the axis of the cam-shaft. The cam may be made adjustable by axial displacement.
