Abstract
909,707. Valve gear. REGIE NATIONAL DES USINES RENAULT. Feb. 2, 1959 [Feb. 5, 1958], No. 3609/59. Class 7(6) In a hydraulic clearance take-up device a tappet 1, Fig. 1, or rocker body, has a bore 1c and a piston 2a forming two chambers 9, 10, which are filled with fluid and sealed by a packing 7, 8, slidably mounted in the bore and surrounding the piston rod 2b, chamber 10 communicates with chamber 9 through a passage 2d in the piston, having a non-return valve 3, and pressure means acts on the fluid so as to force the piston rod out of the bore. During valve lift cam pressure on face 1a causes increase of pressure in chamber 9 to seat the valve 3 and pressure fluid passes through a small annular clearance between piston 2a and bore 1c to cause a slow reduction in length. On the return stroke spring 6 applies pressure to the packing 7, 8 to take up the axial clearance. In another embodiment the spring may be replaced by a source of pressure fluid, e.g. engine oil. In a modification, the piston 2, Fig. 4, is carried directly in a rocker arm 1.
