Abstract

1,126,269. Valve gear. JACOBS MFG. CO. Aug. 26, 1966 [Oct. 1, 1965], No.38326/66. Heading F1B. An I.C. engine brake comprises a cam 17, Fig. co-operating with mechanism to open a spring-closed exhaust valve 11, a piston 21 carried by the mechanism having a hydraulically actuated condition wherein an auxiliary cam 19 co-operates with it to actuate the mechanism to open the valve at or near to the end of the compression stroke, the piston being normally out of engagement with the auxiliary cam. Operation: When the solenoid valve 29 is energized it allows the passage of pressurized oil from pump 32 via rocker shaft chamber 35 to chamber 37 in rocker arm 13. Piston 49 and finger 46 are moved downwardly against spring 52 to allow seating of valve 45. The pressure oil unseats valve 45 and passes into bore 22 Fig. 2 to raise piston 21 against spring 26 until it abuts a stop 25. Whilst the solenoid valve remains energized the piston 21 is engaged cyclically by the auxiliary cam 19, whilst valve 45 acts as a non-return valve. Any excessive hydraulic pressure acts on the head 51 of the finger 46 to unseal the clearance 48 to permit pressure relief. When the solenoid is de-energized passage 31 is closed and the system drains through a relief valve 54. The latter maintains a residual pressure in the system. A lubricant duct 56 which lubricates the rocker arm bearing on the rocker shaft through fine orifices (not shown) also fills the hydraulic passages during the time when the solenoid valve is de-energized. In a modification the piston (21a), Fig. 6 (not shown) has a transverse hole (76) through which a smaller stop pin (77) extends. The differing diameters of the pin and the hole limits the piston movement. In a further embodiment two exhaust valves are actuated by a bridge (59), Fig. 9 (not shown) which is actuated by a rocker arm (61), push rod (61) and tappet (69) from a cam-shaft mounted at the side of the engine cylinder. The piston (72) which is engaged by the auxiliary cam during braking is mounted in the tappet (69).
