Abstract

903,983. Valve gear. ENGINEERING RESEARCH & APPLICATION Ltd. Jan. 5, 1961 [Oct. 7, 1959], No. 33974/59. Class 7(6) A hydraulic tappet comprises a cam-follower with a head 10, including a fluid supply channel 29 controlled by a non-return disc valve 15, a skirt 11 having a central bore 12, a plunger 13, and a spring 16. In the valve closed position, engine oil is fed through channel 29, past valve 15 and through an opening 31 in a cup 14 into the interior of plunger 13. During valve opening, valve 15 is seated and a small quantity of oil is forced through the clearance between plunger 13 and bore 12. During the non-lift period, the spring 16 forces the cam-follower and plunger apart to create a vacuum into which further oil is drawn. The valve 15 may be of nylon, synthetic resin or metal and have a tooth-form flange 18. The head 10 and skirt 11 may be formed integrally. Specification 831,984 is referred to.
