Abstract
1,202,162. Cam mechanisms. JOHNSON PRODUCTS Inc. 7 Feb., 1968 [27 April, 1967], No. 6126/68. Heading F2K. Relates to an hydraulic back-lash adjuster 10 for an I.C. engine valve operating mechanism of the type in which a rocker arm has one end pivotally mounted on a pillar 32 extending from the adjuster, the other end engaging a valve stem, and a portion of its upper surface between its ends engaging a cam. The adjuster comprises a part 14, including a plunger 30 and the pillar 32, the plunger portion 30 of which is retained in a hollow body part 12 by a resilient split ring 16 held in a peripheral groove 38 in one part and engageable with a peripheral shoulder 40 on the other part, the ring, shoulder, and groove being so shaped that a predetermined axial pull on the pillar 32 deforms the ring 16 radially to release its retaining grip and to allow the plunger to be removed axially from the body part 12. The ring may be of circular (Fig. 1), square (Fig. 6, not shown), or inclined rectangular cross-section (Fig. 7), to co-operate with an inclined upper wall of the groove 38. In Fig. 5, the ring has a radially tapered outer periphery co-operating with a rectangular section groove 38a. When the ring is deformed it will pass through the upper section (12a) of the body 12 bore (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). Oil under pressure supplied to a port 22 in the body 12 acts in known manner on the plunger 30, a check valve being provided in the lower, closed end of the body.
