Abstract

886,038. Valves. THOMPSON RAMO WOOLDRIDGE Inc. May 11, 1959 [May 15, 1958], No. 16090/59. Class 135. The spring abutment member 10, Figs. 1 and 2, of a poppet valve comprises a radially extending peripheral margin 24 for seating one end of the spring 16, a central neck 25 and a rounded shoulder 26, the shoulder being arranged to fit into the end coil of the spring to centre the latter on the retainer, and a slot being provided in the neck, the shoulder and the peripheral margin and shaped to allow the valve stem to be received in the portion of the slot in the shoulder and the peripheral margin and moved into the neck for engagement of the abutment member in a recess in the valve stem. The abutment member 10, which may be formed by stamping, is prevented from excessive lateral movement relative to the stem by the neck portion 25. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the abutment member is formed with a conical portion 51 mating with a correspondingly shaped portion on the stem. In order to permit rotation of the valve, a tappet 35 (Fig. 5, not shown) may be provided which, because of a clearance 37 (Fig. 5, not shown) acts upon the abutment member and thereby relieves the spring pressure; the tappet may be cup-shaped (Fig. 6, not shown).
