Abstract

1,235,225. Hydraulic tappets. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 2 Oct., 1969 [16 Oct., 1968], No. 48408/69. Heading F2K. An hydraulic tappet comprises an inverted cup-shaped member 14, adapted to contact a cam 9, an inner member 16, adapted to abut the end of a valve stem 7, and a dished spring plate 18 disposed between inner member 16 and the closed end of member 14 to form a fluid reservoir 19, a ball valve 24 being adapted to close a central aperture 21 in the plate 18 when the tappet is under load. A resilient flexible diaphragm 28 supports the inner member 16 and forms a fluid reservoir 29 beneath the plate 18. A groove 26 in the upper surface of member 16 facilitates flow of fluid between the reservoirs 19, 29 when ball valve 24 uncovers aperture 21. In a modification, an inner member 56, Fig. 3, has a part-cylindrical upper surface 57 which provides a restricted passage 58 at each side of an opening 53 in a spring plate 52 for leakage of fluid from a pressure chamber 54 during the valve lift stroke. A spring 59 may be interposed between the spring plate 52 and the inner member 56. In a further modification, an inner member 73 incorporates passages 76, 77, and a flat valve plate 80 partly closes the passage 77 during the valve lift stroke. In each of the embodiments, a restricted orifice, such as orifice 22, Fig. 2, may be formed in the spring plate.
