Abstract
806,824. Liquid springs. CLEVELAND PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. Feb. 22, 1957, No. 6088/57. Class 108(3) A liquid spring comprises a main chamber 17 and one 18 (as shown) or more, additional chambers filled with liquid, a plunger 12, and plunger-operated valve means 23 arranged to open the chamber 18 at a predetermined position during the stroke of the plunger in order to change the rate of spring at the predetermined position. In Fig. 1, a fluted stem 25 rigid with the plunger 12 is adapted to engage and lift off its seat against the action of a spring 26, a ball valve 23, at the predetermined position of the plunger 12. The stroke of the plunger 12 is limited by engagement of a damping head 31 integral with the plunger, with a fixed skirt 16. Filling of the spring is effected through a plug 35 in conjunction with a drain plug 36. In Fig. 4, the additional chamber is in the form of an annular chamber 54 surrounding the main chamber 41. Valves 64 in the wall of the main chamber 41 are. normally maintained in closed position by springs 66, but carry stems 68 which project into the chamber 41 and are adapted to be engaged by a camming surface 69 on the piston 70.
