Abstract

901,089. Fluid-pressure blasting cartridges- OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 29, 1959 [July 15, 1958], No. 22223/59. Class 9 (1). A fluid-pressure blasting cartridge is provided comprising a head 1 with discharge ports 10 closed by a sleeve valve 46 having openings 48 through which gas is leaked from the body 3 to a valve control chamber 16. Pivotally connected to the valve is a link 53 also pivoted on a link 41, which has a nose bearing against a lever 30. The lever 30 has pivotal connection with a plunger 25 and bears against a fulcrum at the end of a control shaft 37 adjustably held in a bore parallel with the plunger 25. A spring 31 bears against the head of the plunger and against a plug 32 in which the plunger can slide. By adjustment of the plug, the pressure of the spring may be altered. Passages 36 in the head 26 of the plunger allow gas to leak into the space around the stem of the plunger. When the pressure on the left-hand side of the head 26 overcomes the pressure on the other side combined with the resistance of the spring 31, the plunger yields and swings the lever 30, thus breaking the toggle 41, 53. The valve, thus released, moves and opens the ports 10 allowing the gas charge to escape. To prevent damage to the valve, a spacer ring 21 having an annular lip 22 is provided. As the valve moves to the open position, its skirt 47 enters an annular recess 23 surrounding the lip, the gas trapped in the recess acting as a cushion for the valve. The link 53 may be surrounded by a spring (not shown in Fig. 1), which returns the valve to its initial position after venting of the cartridge. In a modification, the control shaft is replaced by an adjustable screw and the plunger is rockably mounted. In Fig. 5, the swinging link 99 is provided with a return spring 145 and has a locking sear 138 which engages the end of the plunger 139 when the valve is closed. Movement of the link 99 is limited by an adjustable screw 101, extending through the link 99, coming into contact with a stop 102.
