Abstract

782,851. Valves. FAIRCHILD ENGINE & AIRPLANE CORPORATION. Feb. 2, 1955, No. 3104/55. Class 135. A valve comprising a curved, pivotally mounted closure member 11 movable to a closed position in which it extends across a tube 10 and to an open position within a surrounding housing 13 coacts with an annular seat 20 and has means for pressing the closure member and seat together when the valve is closed and for relieving that pressure in response to opening movement of the valve. In the embodiment shown the closure member is of part-spherical form and the seat 20, carried by a bellows 24, is formed with passages 26 with which passages 27 in the closure member are brought into register when the valve is closed to give pressure fluid upstream of the valve access to the interior of the bellows. Movement of the closure member towards the open position interrupts this communication and vents the interior of the bellows. The seat 20 is slidable on a sealing ring 22 mounted in the tube 10 and is preferably of bronze or carbon. The housing 13 is welded to a tubular member 19 and screwed to an end fitting 15 which is welded to the tube 10. The seat 20 may be of spherical form to mate with the closure member or, alternatively, conical. The closure member is mounted on a spindle carried by roller bearings and is actuated by a crank arm. In a modification a piston and cylinder are employed in place of the bellows 24. In a further modification the seat, urged towards the closure member by upstream pressure acting within a bellows chamber, is eased therefrom by eccentrics on the valve spindle. At the same time, engagement between one of the eccentrics, which is knurled, and a knurled part of the seat causes partial rotation of the latter to provide a wiping action. It is stated that the pressure holding the seat in engagement with the closure member may alternatively be relieved by a valve which is tripped by cam mechanism or by a solenoid energized by a micro-switch in response to opening movement of the main valve.
