Abstract

967,733. Smokers' lighters. LA NATIONALE S.A., and RONSON CORPORATION. Sept. 7, 1960 [Sept. 8, 1959], No. 30876/60. Heading F4F. The reservoir of a smoker's lighter is fitted with a valve 1 having an inlet passage 5, an exhaust passage 6 and a movable closure member for each passage, and the vessel for refilling the reservoir with liquefied fuel has a spout 10 which on being inserted in the valve 1 opens both closure members. The inlet and exhaust passages 5, 6 are closed by a single resilient membrane 7 held in position by two tabs 9 and pressed by the fuel pressure in the reservoir against the base 4 of the valve. The spout has a projection 11 which passes through the inlet passage 5 to move the membrane away from the inlet thereto. The fuel passes through a longitudinal bore 13 and a transverse milling 15 in the projection 11 into the reservoir. A further projection 12 on the spout passes through the exhaust passage 6 and moves the membrane away from the inlet thereto. Gas escapes through bores 14 in the projection 12 and between the spout and the valve body. The projections may be of different lengths to cause one valve to open before the other. In the further construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), the inlet and exhaust passages are closed by rubber balls instead of a diaphragm. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the inlet passage is closed by a ball and the exhaust passage is closed by a member having a stem which extends through the exhaust passage to abut a flat part of the head of the spout of the refilling vessel.
