Abstract

967,437. Smoker's lighters. NATIONALE S.A., and RONSON CORPORATION. Sept. 7, 1960 [Sept. 8, 1959], No. 30877/60. Heading F4F. The liquefied gas reservoir 1 of a smoker's lighter has a single orifice 4 for the simultaneous entry of liquefied gas from a refill vessel and the exhaust to atmosphere of gas in the reservoir, the orifice 4 being closed by a valve 6 adapted to be opened by a spout 12 on the refill vessel. The liquefied gas flows down a bore 26 and along grooves 27 in the spout 12 and then through lateral ports 10 in the cylindrical casing of the valve 6, and the gas in the reservoir escapes through the ports 10 and through the space between the spout 12 and the orifice 4. The refill vessel has a closure valve comprising a flexible resilient membrane 13 co-operating with a cylindrical valve seat 22. When the spout 12 is inserted into the orifice 4 of the reservoir and pushed downwardly it opens the valve 6 and the opening movement is stopped by the valve 6 abutting a projection 11 on a plug 9. Increased force on the refill vessel then causes the spout 12 to slide upwardly in the refill vessel to raise the membrane 13 so that liquefied gas can flow through holes 14 in the membrane 13 and through notches 29 at the upper end of the spout into the bore of the spout. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the reservoir valve comprises a strip of flexible material held at its two ends but having free sides. The enlarged central portion of the valve engages the orifice 4. The opening movement of the valve is limited by a shoulder on the spout engaging the valve casing. The spout has a longitudinal rib engaging in a groove 35 in the valve casing to insure that a transverse fuel groove on the end of the spout is directed towards the free sides of the valve.
