Abstract

779,766. Pocket lighters. RONSON CORPORATION. Feb. 14, 1955 [June 17, 1954], No. 4316/55. Class 75(3) The flow of gas to the burner of a cigarette &c. lighter is adjusted by the relative positioning of the piercing pin and the correspondingly shaped orifice seat it make by. puncturing, in situ, a slug of material such as lead, deformable yet retaining a permanent set, positioned in a housing through which the gas flows, the slug being expanded by the puncturing operation into sealing engagement with the housing. As shown, a lighter burner as described in Specification 725,334 having a burner controlled valve held closed by a ball mechanism 14 as described in Specification 683,734 receives its gas fuel supply from the reservoir 22 through an internally threaded housing 20 sealed in the lighter casing and receiving an externally threaded nut 23 provided with cavities on opposite ends thereof having press fitted thereinto, respectively a burner post 11 and a stem 24 carrying at its end a conical piercing pin 25 which on screwing the nut into the housing is forced into a slug 26, e.g. of lead whose peripheral portions expand outwardly into the threads of the housing until a permanent locking gas tight seal 30 is effected and the pin pierces completely the slug displacing material to form a seal 32 with the walls of the fuel duct 31 at the bottom of the housing. Reverse rotation of the nut varies the size of the fuel duct between the pin 25 and the orifice seat 34 for the gas to pass into a passage 29 on the stem 24 in communication with the burner controlled valve through a passage 16 in the dividing wall between the recess in the nut. The precise position of the pin 25 relative to the orifice seat is maintained by a spring steel wave washer 35 provided under the nut head 23 and held in compression between the head 23 and the lighter casing wall.
